Minoxidil shedding: why hair falls out when you start
You start a hair regrowth treatment and more hair starts falling out. It's alarming, it's common, and the manufacturer's own leaflet addresses it directly.

What the leaflet says
When you first begin to use minoxidil topical solution 5%, your hair loss may increase temporarily for up to 2 weeks. This is likely a sign that you are getting rid of old hairs in order to regrow more new hairs. This temporary increase in hair loss is expected and is a part of the process for how minoxidil topical solution 5% regrows hair. Remember, this increased hair loss is temporary. However, if it continues after two weeks, see your doctor.
The three things that matter
- It's described as expected. The manufacturer documents it in the leaflet inside the box — it is not a sign the product is defective or that you're using it wrong.
- Up to two weeks is the stated window. That's the benchmark the leaflet gives.
- Past two weeks, see a doctor. The leaflet is explicit about this, and it's a sensible line to hold — continued heavy shedding can point to something other than pattern hair loss.
Why it happens
The leaflet's explanation is that old hairs are shed to make way for new growth. Hair grows in cycles, and the shedding phase of a cycle precedes new growth from that follicle — so a treatment that pushes follicles into a new growth cycle can bring forward shedding that would have happened anyway, compressing it into a noticeable couple of weeks.
How to get through it
The main risk during this window is quitting. That's worth understanding clearly: the leaflet says results may not appear until 2 to 4 months, so stopping at week two means abandoning the treatment before it has had any chance to show what it does. If you stop entirely, any regrowth you do gain later is lost within 3 to 4 months — the treatment only works while it's in use.
Practical advice: take a photo of the affected area on day one, in consistent lighting, and don't evaluate progress daily. Compare at months 2 and 4, which are the points the label actually references.
When it isn't the normal shedding phase
See a doctor if shedding continues beyond two weeks, if it's patchy rather than diffuse, if your scalp becomes red, irritated or painful, or if you experience any of the stop-use symptoms on the label. Sudden or patchy hair loss is specifically listed as a reason not to use this product in the first place.
