How to use Kirkland Minoxidil 5%: the directions, step by step
Minoxidil only works if it's applied the way the label describes. The directions are short — but the details people skip are exactly the ones that waste product or cause irritation.

The directions, verbatim
The Drug Facts label on every Kirkland Signature Minoxidil 5% carton says:
Apply 1 mL with the applicator 2 times a day directly onto the scalp in the hair loss area. Using more or more often will not improve results. Continued use is necessary to increase and keep your hair regrowth, or hair loss will begin again.
That's the whole method: 1 mL, twice a day, on the scalp. Everything below is about doing that accurately.
Step by step
- Start with dry hair and scalp.Applying to a wet scalp dilutes the solution and lets it run off the area you're targeting.
- Fill the dropper to the 1 mL line. Not the top of the dropper — the 1 mL mark. This is the single most common mistake, and overfilling doesn't help: the label is explicit that using more won't improve results.
- Part the hair to expose the scalp. The solution needs to reach skin, not sit on hair. Work in a few parts across the thinning area.
- Apply in small amounts across the area, then spread gently with a fingertip. Wash your hands afterward.
- Let it dry completely— usually 2 to 4 hours — before lying down, wearing a hat, or applying styling products. If you go to bed while it's wet, most of it ends up on your pillow.
Timing that actually fits a routine
Twice a day means roughly 12 hours apart. Most men settle on morning (after showering, before leaving) and evening (a few hours before bed, so it dries). The specific clock times matter far less than consistency — the label is built around ongoing, uninterrupted use.
Mistakes that waste the bottle
- Applying to hair instead of scalp. It needs skin contact.
- Doubling up after a missed dose. The label says more or more often won't improve results — just resume your normal dose.
- Applying right before bed. Give it hours to dry.
- Using it on other parts of the body. The label specifically says not to.
- Stopping when it seems to be working. Per the leaflet, regrown hair is lost within 3 to 4 months of stopping.
Safety points from the label
This product is for men only, external use only, and flammable — keep it away from fire or flame. Avoid contact with the eyes; if it happens, rinse with plenty of cool tap water. Do not use it if your scalp is red, inflamed, infected, irritated or painful, if your hair loss is sudden or patchy, if you don't know the cause of your hair loss, if you have no family history of hair loss, or if you're under 18. Ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease.
Stop use and ask a doctor if you get chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness; sudden unexplained weight gain; swelling of the hands or feet; scalp irritation or redness; unwanted facial hair growth; or if you see no regrowth after 4 months.
